Owensboro Joins Nationwide Response to AIDS Crisis Among African Americans

Owensboro, KY

February 4, 2007 -- On February 4, 2007 Black American leaders and organizations of Owensboro will respond to the impact of HIV and AIDS in the city’s African American communities in the seventh annual observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day which is February 7 (NBHAAD). Reverend Theresa Wilcox-Barksdale, an HIV positive African-American mother of seven will be speaking at Asbury United Methodist Church during the 10:00AM morning service encouraging citizens to get educated, get tested, get treated and get involved with HIV/AIDS as it continues to devastate Black communities. She will speak of her own personal struggles and those of her family. She will also speak of her hopes that through her testimony fewer Blacks will have to experience the hardships of HIV/AIDS. “Seventy-two African Americans are infected with HIV every day,” said Christophre Woods of the Owensboro Area HIV/AIDS Task Force. “African Americans make up approximately 13 percent of the population of the United States, yet almost half of the total AIDS cases reported in this country are among members of the Black community. In 2006, HIV/AIDS is one of the top ten leading causes of death for African Americans. In Owensboro an alarming percentage of people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS are Black.” Owensboro is one of more than 300 cities across the U.S. that will sponsor programs to commemorate National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day to call attention to the problem and seek solutions to halt the epidemic. Please come out and support the community effort to eradicate HIV/AIDS in our community by attending the service at Asbury United Methodist on Sunday, February 4, 2007 at 10:00. The church is located at 2711 Cravens Avenue. Food and drinks will be served following the service.
